Extension Backup Month Credits FAQ

What Is An Extension?

Backblaze is raising prices for our Computer Backup service on March 12, 2019 at 0:00 UTC. All licenses - whether individual or within a group - are affected. Between February 12th, 2019 and 5PM Pacific on March 11, 2019, we are offering all existing customers a chance to buy Extensions in the form of backup month credits.

An Extension is 12 One-month backup credits for Computer Backup. Existing Backblaze customers may purchase one Extension for every license in their account. Extensions may be purchased between February 12, 2019 and March 11, 2019 at 5PM Pacific.

All customers may choose to purchase an Extension for all the active licenses in their Backblaze account. Active licenses are those which are currently being used to pay for computers which are backing up.

*Note On Renewal Dates -> Purchasing an Extension does not affect your accounts' renewal date. It will stay the same.

Extension purchases will be available from February 12, 2019 to March 11, 2019 at 5PM Pacific. After 5PM Pacific on March 11, 2019, any new licenses purchased (and all account renewals) will be charged at the then current Backblaze rates.

Extensions CANNOT be used before the pricing change goes into effect March 12, 2019. If your account renews before March 12, 2019 and you purchase an extension, the credits will be used on your next renewal on or after March 12, 2019.

Extension Credits Expiration

If not used, these 2019 Extension credits will expire on March 12, 2022.

Using an Extension

After you purchase an Extension, no other action is required. Extension credits will be applied on the first renewal date after the price increase goes into effect on March 12, 2019. This means that if you renew between February 12th and March 11, 2019 - you will renew at the current Backblaze prices, and any Extension credits that you have purchased will be applied during your next renewal.

*Note On Renewal Dates -> Purchasing an Extension does not affect your accounts' renewal date. It will stay the same as in the examples below.

Monthly Account Holders: After March 11, 2019 one credit will be applied at the time of renewal, extending your service one month at a time. If you add licenses to your account, your credits will automatically be applied to payments due for all licenses at the time of next renewal after March 12, 2019. Any renewals before March 12, 2019 will be at the current Backblaze rate and will not use an Extension credit. Example below.

Yearly Account Holders: After March 11, 2019 all credits will be applied at your next Backblaze renewal. If you add one or more licenses to your account, your backup credits will be applied and any remaining balance will be charged to your credit card on file. Any renewals before March 12, 2019 will be at the current Backblaze rate and will not use an Extension credit. Example below.

Bi-Yearly Account Holders: After March 11, 2019 all credits will be applied at your next Backblaze renewal, any remaining balance will be billed to the credit card you have on file. Any renewals before March 12, 2019 will be at the current Backblaze rate and will not use an Extension credit. Example below.

Example: Monthly Licensed Accounts

Diane is on a monthly subscription with one license. It renews on the 17th of every month. On March 10th, she purchases an Extension for her license. Her account renews on March 17th and uses one monthly credit created through her Extension.

On April 10th she adds a computer to her account. Her credit card will be charged for the appropriate pro-rated amount of backup service so this new computer is paid through April 17th (the date the account will renew). On April 17th, two monthly credits will be used to renew both of her computers. At that time, she will have 9 monthly credits remaining in her account.

Example: Yearly Licensed Accounts

Sam is on a yearly subscription with one license. It renews every year on April 27th. On March 9th, he purchases an Extension for his license.

On April 3rd, he adds a computer to his account. His credit card will be charged the appropriate pro-rated amount so this new computer is paid through April 27th (the date the account will renew). On April 27th, the 12 monthly credits from his Extension purchase will be used for one of his license renewals, and his credit card will be charged for the additional license.

Example: Bi-Yearly Licensed Accounts

Norm is on a Bi-Yearly subscription with one license. It will renew on December 1st, 2019. On February 16th, 2019 he purchases an Extension for his license.

On November 1st, 2019, he adds a computer to his account. His credit card will be charged the appropriate pro-rated amount so this new computer is paid through December 1, 2019 (the date the account will renew). On December 1st, 2019, his 12 monthly credits will be applied to his account. The remaining balance will be charged to his credit card.

Adding a License After Purchasing An Extension

All customers are eligible for a one time purchase of Extensions for the licenses in their account.

If you have purchased an Extension and would like to add a license to your account before the program ends on March 11, 2019 at 5PM Pacific and would like to purchase an Extension for that new license, please write to support. We will refund your prior Extension purchase and make your account re-eligible for buying Extensions. You will then need to purchase Extensions for your licenses here. Please note, for Personal Backup, you cannot purchase an Extension for licenses that are not in use, they must be tied to a computer.

If you get a new machine after the Extension Program has concluded and purchase a license for the new machine, the purchase will be prorated to your current renewal date in accordance with our Payments and Refunds Policy. Your Extensions will be automatically applied to your account and any payment due for incremental licenses will then be charged.

Keeping Track Of Your Extension

After purchasing an Extension it will appear on your Backblaze billing page. To visit your Account Billing page (sign in with your Backblaze credentials and you will be taken to the Billing section). The Extensions will appear under the “Transactions” section.

No, you do not need to purchase an Extension. They were designed as a way for Backblaze to say ‘thank you’ to our existing customers.
