Extension Backup Month Credits FAQ

Backblaze is changing prices for our Computer Backup service on August 17, 2021 at 0:00 UTC. All licenses—whether for individuals or group members—are affected. Between July 13, 2021 and August 16, 2021 at 5 p.m. Pacific time, we are offering all existing customers a chance to buy extensions in the form of backup month credits.

What Is an Extension?

An extension is a quantity of one-month backup credits for active Computer Backup licenses. The total price and number of credits issued depends on the number of active licenses on an account—an account with one active license pays $60 and receives 12 one-month credits for an extension, each additional active license incurs an additional $60 charge and receives an additional 12 one-month credits. (For example, an account with 3 active licenses would pay $180 for 36 one-month credits). There are no partial extensions, the size of extensions depends wholly on the number of active licenses.

Existing Backblaze customers may purchase an extension once. This extension will cover every license in their account.

What is an Active License?

Active licenses are those which are currently being used to pay for computers that are backing up.

How Much Does an Extension Cost?

Extensions can be purchased for $60 per active license on your account (where applicable, taxes/fees/VAT will be applied).

When Can I Buy An Extension?

Extensions may be purchased between July 13, 2021 and August 16, 2021 at 5 p.m. Pacific time.

What Is a Backup Month Credit Worth?

Credits have no cash value, and one credit is worth one month of backup. Credits are non-transferrable.

Extensions Are a Limited Time Offer for Existing Customers

Extension purchases will be available from July 13, 2021 to August 16, 2021 at 5 p.m. Pacific time. After that time, any new licenses purchased (and all account renewals) will be charged at the then current Backblaze rates.

Extensions CANNOT be used before the pricing change goes into effect August 16, 2021. If your account renews before August 16, 2021 and you purchase an extension, the credits will be used on your next renewal.

Extension Credits Expiration

If not used, these 2021 extension credits will expire on August 17, 2024.

  1. Group Administrators: You may purchase an extension for all licenses inside any or all of your Groups. If you purchase an extension for a Group, extensions will be purchased for ALL licenses inside of that Group. Administrators can choose which Group, if any, they would like to purchase an extension for on the Group Management page.Purchase_Group.png

Using an Extension

After you purchase an extension, no other action is required. Extension credits will be applied on the first renewal date after the price increase goes into effect on August 16, 2021 at 5 p.m. Pacific time. This means that if you renew between July 13, 2021 and August 16, 2021 at 5 p.m. Pacific time, you will renew at the current Backblaze prices, and any extension credits that you have purchased will be applied during your next renewal (after August 16, 2021).

Monthly Account Holders: After August 16, 2021, one credit will be applied at the time of renewal, extending your service one month at a time. If you add licenses to your account, your credits will automatically be applied to payments due for all licenses at the time of the next renewal after August 16, 2021. Any renewals before August 16, 2021 will be at the current Backblaze rate and will not use an extension credit. Example below.

Yearly Account Holders: After August 16, 2021, all credits will be applied at your next Backblaze renewal. If you add one or more licenses to your account, your backup credits will be applied and any remaining balance will be charged to your credit card on file. Any renewals before August 16, 2021 will be at the current Backblaze rate and will not use an extension credit. Example below.

Two-Year Account Holders: After August 16, 2021, all credits will be applied at your next Backblaze renewal, any remaining balance will be billed to the credit card you have on file. Any renewals before August 16, 2021 will be at the current Backblaze rate and will not use an extension credit. Example below.

Example: Monthly Licensed Accounts

Diane is on a monthly subscription with one license. It renews on the 24th of every month. On August 13th, she purchases an extension for her license. Her account renews on August 24th and uses one monthly credit created through her extension.

On September 10th, she adds a computer to her account. Her credit card will be charged for the appropriate prorated amount of backup service, so this new computer is paid through September 24th (the date the account will renew). On September 24th, two monthly credits will be used to renew both of her computers. At that time, she will have nine monthly credits remaining in her account.

Example: Yearly Licensed Accounts

Sam is on a yearly subscription with one license. It renews every year on September 27th. On August 13th, he purchases an extension for his license.

On September 3rd, he adds a computer to his account. His credit card will be charged the appropriate prorated amount, so this new computer is paid through September 27th (the date the account will renew). On September 27th, the 12 monthly credits from his extension purchase will be used for one of his license renewals, and his credit card will be charged for the additional license.

Example: Two-Year Licensed Accounts

Norm is on a two-year subscription with one license. It will renew on May 1, 2022. On August 13, 2021 he purchases an extension for his license.

On November 1, 2021, he adds a computer to his account. His credit card will be charged the appropriate prorated amount, so this new computer is paid through May 1, 2022 (the date the account will renew). On May 1, 2022, the 12 monthly credits from his extension purchase will be applied towards his renewal, and the remaining balance will be charged to his credit card.

Adding a License After Purchasing an Extension

All customers are eligible for a one-time purchase of extensions for the licenses in their account.

If you have purchased an extension and would like to add a license to your account before the program ends on August 16, 2021 at 5 p.m. Pacific and would like to purchase an extension for that new license, please write to Support. We will refund your prior extension purchase and make your account re-eligible for buying extensions. You will then need to purchase extensions for your licenses here. Please note, for Personal Backup, you cannot purchase an extension for licenses that are not in use, they must be tied to a computer.

If you get a new machine after the Extension program has concluded and purchase a license for the new machine, the purchase will be prorated to your current renewal date in accordance with our Payments and Refunds Policy. Your extensions will be automatically applied to your account and any payment due for incremental licenses will then be charged.

Keeping Track of Your Extension

After purchasing an extension, it will appear on your Backblaze Billing page. To visit your Account Billing page, sign in with your Backblaze credentials and you will be taken to the Billing section. The extensions will appear under the “Transactions” section.

I Want to Cancel My Extension

Extension purchases fall under our Refund Policy. If for whatever reason you do not wish to use your extension and would instead like a refund (within 30 days of purchase), please contact Support and request one.

Are Extensions Mandatory?

No, you do not need to purchasean extension to continue using Backblaze. They were designed as a way for Backblaze to say thank you to our existing customers by offering them an extended license period at lower prices.

Can I Renew Without Purchasing an Extension?

Yes. Your renewal will process at the then-current prices.

What Happens to an Extension if I Cancel My Account?

The backup month credits and any associated licenses will be removed upon account cancellation. No recovery is possible after that point. Please visit the Terms of Service for more information about terms and refunds.

Extended Version History and Backup Extensions

Credits cover backup licenses, but not Extended Version History payment. If a person buys an extension and has Extended Version History enabled, we will use the backup month credits to pay for the licenses at renewal time, but their payment method on file will be charged for any Extended Version History payments.
