Backblaze Mass Silent Install

Companies, organizations, schools, non-profits, managed service providers (MSP's), and others can deploy Backblaze computer backup remotely across all their computers without any end-user interaction. The deployment can put all computers into a single account managed centrally or can provide each end-user with their own account managed within a Group by administrators.

IT can either script the deployment themselves using the steps below or can use any Remote Management and Monitoring (RMM) tool they wish. See example instructions for popular RMM tools Munki and JAMF. However, any other RMM tool (such as KACE, SCCM, AirWatch, Connectwise, AutoTask, etc.) should be able to deploy using similar steps.

Brief Option Overview:

  • Single Account Managed Centrally: Create a Backblaze account. Deploy the installer with the email address of the created account to all computers.

  • Individual Accounts Managed in Groups: Create a Backblaze account and Group. Deploy the installer with each user's email address (and a per-Group groupID and groupToken) to each computer.

The following instructions will allow your group administrator to create Backblaze accounts for each computer, to backup each of those computers, and to have those accounts all be managed under one Backblaze group.

Before you start:

  • Sign in to your group admin’s Backblaze account.
  • Create a Backblaze group (or find an existing group).
  • From the Invite & Approve page for that group, click on the "Advanced Deployment Instructions" button and locate the groupID and groupToken for that group.
  • Create a list of all the computers and the corresponding user’s email address in your organization.

Command Line on Mac:

  • Download the Mac installer from https://secure.backblaze.com/mac/install_backblaze.dmg
  • For each Mac computer in your organization:
    • Copy the installer to each computer. Mount the DMG.
    • Execute in a terminal window:

      sudo /Volumes/Backblaze\ Installer/Backblaze\ Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/bzinstall_mate -nogui -createaccount user@corp.com password-goes-here groupID groupToken

If the password is "none" (without the quotes) ... an automatically generated password will be used and the user can request a password reset on our Backblaze website.

Command Line on Windows:

  • Download the Windows installer from https://secure.backblaze.com/win32/install_backblaze.exe.
  • For each Windows computer in your organization:
    • Copy the installer to each computer.
    • Execute in a command prompt window (with admin privileges):

      [install_dir]/install_backblaze -nogui -createaccount user@corp.com password-goes-here groupID groupToken

If the password is "none" (without the quotes) ... an automatically generated password will be used and the user can request a password reset on our Backblaze website.
